MC Chess places a playable chess board into Minecraft, with a block to set down and interact with, a GUI and move rules that follow standard chess.

What it does

Players set down a Chess Board block and open it to play a game against another player. The game is built on the chesslib Java library, which generates legal moves, so castling, en passant, highlighting of legal squares and promotion are handled by the same code that checks each move. The side assigned to each player is picked at random, so one player may be black and the other white.

The mod needs Fabric API and runs on Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.4. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. Files are released under the MIT License and the source code and issue tracker are public. The first and latest file is 1.0.0, published on 2024-05-07 on the beta channel, and only 1.20.4 is listed as a supported game version. A basic chess engine for playing against the computer is planned for later releases, but is not part of this version.
