EntityCulling 1.8.9 port
EntityCulling 1.8.9 port is a Forge client-side optimization that skips drawing block entities hidden from the player's view.
What it does
Vanilla draws every tile entity in the field of view, even ones blocked by walls or terrain, so hundreds of hidden tile entities can cost frames without the player ever seeing them. This port of the EntityCulling mod targets that cost by skipping rendering for tile entities that sit behind other geometry. It is a port of the original mod, with the mixin approach adapted to Minecraft 1.8.9.
The mod offers two culling methods. The default uses an OpenGL occlusion query, which gives pixel-perfect bounding box culling with only a one frame delay and a small overhead. The alternative uses a raytraced culling implementation, which needs OpenGL 4.3 hardware. Raytraced culling uses more CPU and occlusion culling uses more GPU, so the better choice depends on which resource a given machine has to spare. Installation requires RenderLib 1.8.9 port. The mod is published for Forge only, for 1.8.9, and it runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it. The code is licensed All rights reserved and is not open source. Public source code and an issue tracker are linked from the project.
Key features
Hidden tile entity culling
Tile entities that are not visible from the camera are excluded from rendering, reducing work on the frame.
Occlusion query culling
The default method tests bounding boxes with OpenGL occlusion queries, giving pixel-perfect results after a single frame of delay.
Raytraced culling
An alternative method casts rays to decide visibility, trading GPU work for CPU work on machines with OpenGL 4.3 support.
Two-method choice
Players pick between occlusion queries and raytracing depending on whether the CPU or the GPU has more headroom.
