AI Improvements: Performance Tuning

by Built Broken Modding

AI Improvements: Performance Tuning is a server-side mod that cuts AI cost on busy servers by caching costly AI calculations and letting individual AI behaviors be switched off.

ForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.7.10 – 26.3

What it does

The mod targets the cost of vanilla AI on busy servers, where the CPU time spent on entities grows with the player population. Instead of reducing mob spawn rates, which the author found gave no real fix, it changes how AI functions run. Most of the gain comes from caching values that are expensive to calculate, trading CPU time for a small amount of memory. It also addresses problems such as too many animals, performance drops caused by large zombie swarms, and simple removal tasks that larger AI improvement mods skip.

Installed on the server and not needed on player clients, the mod is server-side only. Each feature can be turned off in the configuration, including the EntityLookHelper replacement. Its effect depends on the feature and the game version, and on newer versions of the game some of the same fixes are already built in, so the gain is smaller there than on older releases. Forge and NeoForge builds span 35 release versions, 1.7.10 – 26.3, under All rights reserved and not open source.

Key features

  1. Cached AI calculations

Heavily calculated AI values are cached, which reduces CPU time spent on each tick of entity behavior.

  2. Switchable AI behaviors

Individual AI changes can be disabled in the configuration, so a server can keep only the parts it needs.

  3. Animal population control

The mod handles cases where too many animals accumulate, a common source of load on busy servers.

  4. Zombie swarm handling

Performance costs from large groups of zombies are reduced, addressing a known slowdown in crowded areas.

  5. Removal of skipped tasks

Simple removal tasks that larger AI improvement mods leave out are covered by this mod.

Use cases

Large modded servers

Server owners running many mods can use the mod to reduce the CPU time that entity AI takes from the server.

Crowded mob areas

Servers with many zombies or animals in one place can use the mod to limit the slowdown those groups cause.

Who it’s for: Server owners and server administrators who want to reduce CPU load from AI on large, heavily modded servers are the audience for this mod.

True POWER: Optimization is distributed under the MIT License, with files for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 on Forge and NeoForge, and it is limited to client-side use. Very Many Players (Forge) is distributed under the MIT License, targets Forge only for 1.19.2 – 1.20.1, and works on either side, and neither needs it. ScalableLux is distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.21 – 26.3 on Fabric and NeoForge. This mod is licensed under All rights reserved, which differs from each of these alternatives.

Questions

Does AI Improvements need to be installed on the client?

No. Only the server needs it, and the mod is coded to work without a client-side installation. It can also be installed on the client alone, though that may not improve frame rates much.

Which loaders and versions does AI Improvements support?

Builds are available for Forge and NeoForge. Forge's latest file is 0.5.2 for 1.18.2, and NeoForge's latest file is 0.5.5 for 26.3.

Why might the performance gain be small on newer versions?

Newer game versions have implemented fixes for AI, including a rotation fix, so the impact of this mod is lower than on older versions.

What happens if the EntityLookHelper replacement is disabled?

Disabling that replacement gives little improvement to the AI code. The author notes that other disable settings still work if this one is turned off.
