ApexScaler
Players on older hardware who want higher frame rates can use ApexScaler, a Forge client mod that scales the 3D scene and culls hidden entities.
What it does
ApexScaler works through spatial upscaling and entity culling, both aimed at lowering the load on the GPU and CPU in demanding scenes. Its stated goal is a large gain in frames per second without giving up visual comfort, and it is aimed at machines from around 2010 that run Forge on the LWJGL 2 stack. The configuration screen opens with the F8 key and applies changes in real time.
The mod is client-side only, so only the player's game needs it and a server can be joined without it. The license is All rights reserved, which means the code is not open source. It is published for Forge only, across four release versions: 1.8.8, 1.8.9, 1.9 and 1.9.4, with 1.6 for 1.9.4 as the latest file.
Key features
Scale resolution adjustment
The internal 3D scene can be rendered at a chosen percentage such as 50% or 25%, which frees GPU resources on weak cards.
Upscaling switch
A shader-based scaling algorithm with sharpness restoration can be turned on or off instantly from the menu.
Entity culling management
The aggressiveness of invisible-object culling can be tuned to ease CPU stress in mob-dense areas.
In-game configuration menu
Pressing F8 opens the settings screen, where the recommended values for maximum frame rate can be applied while playing.

Use cases
Weak graphics cards
Setting the scale to 50% or 25% is the option intended for low-end GPUs that struggle with full-resolution rendering.
Mob-dense areas on older processors
Entity culling reduces the work a processor does on crowded scenes, which the author describes as the case where older CPUs benefit most.
Who it’s for: Players on Forge 1.8.8 – 1.9.4 whose computers are older or have weak graphics hardware, and who would rather trade some rendering detail for a higher frame rate.
How it compares
Entity Culling is a Forge client mod for 1.12.2 – 1.16.5 under All rights reserved, so it targets a newer range than ApexScaler. Entity Culling backport is open source under the MIT License for 1.6.4, while OptaMod is a Forge client mod for 1.13.2 – 1.14.4 under All rights reserved, so it covers a newer range than ApexScaler.
