FPS Reducer
by bre2el
With FPS Reducer, the game lowers its frame rate on its own when the player is away from the keyboard, so the GPU and CPU work less.
What it does
When no input arrives for a set time, or when the game window is inactive or minimized, the mod caps the frame rate lower and can also lower the sound volume. The aim is to cut GPU and CPU use while the game keeps running, for example during automated farming or industry, or while other work is done alongside Minecraft in the background.
The mod is client-side only, so only the player's client needs it and servers do not. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 41 release versions, 1.7.10 – 26.3. The code is covered by All rights reserved, and the project is not open source; an issue tracker is linked from its public pages.
Key features
Idle frame rate reduction
After a chosen period without mouse or keyboard input, the frame rate drops to a lower limit until input resumes.
Inactive window handling
The frame rate falls when the game window loses focus or is minimized, so a background Minecraft uses fewer resources.
Volume suppression
Sound volume can be lowered while the window is inactive or minimized, so background play stays quiet.
On-screen FPS readout
The current frame rate is shown at the edge of the screen, so the effect of each setting can be checked directly.
Client thread CPU usage
From version 1.14 on, the CPU usage of the client thread is displayed alongside the frame rate.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.

Use cases
Unattended automation
Players who leave farms or factories running for long stretches can cut GPU and CPU load while nobody is interacting with the game.
Working alongside the game
Someone who keeps Minecraft open in the background while using other programs can limit the load it places on the machine.
Who it’s for: Players who run Minecraft on a single computer and want less processor and graphics load during idle or background time. Servers gain nothing from it, since the mod runs only on the client.
How it compares
Advanced FPS Limiter is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and built for Fabric across 1.17 – 26.2. Dynamic FPS covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.14.3 – 26.3, is client-side only and open source under the MIT License. Simple overlay is for Fabric across 1.20.1 – 1.20.6, is server-side only and is not open source. FPS Reducer differs from these in being client-side only and not open source, with a license of All rights reserved.
