Entity Distance 1.12.2

by ydmsama

This Forge 1.12.2 mod lets players set separate rendering and tracking distances for entities, which can cut the work the client does for distant mobs.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.12.2

What it does

The mod changes how far away entities are drawn and how far the server reports them to each client. An entity is only rendered once it sits inside the tracking distance, so the actual visible distance is limited by whichever of the two settings is lower. Closer limits reduce the load on both the frame rate and the network, and the author recommends lowering the rendering distance on weaker computers.

The mod can be set per entity type, so hostile mobs can stay visible farther away while neutral animals are drawn only up close. A settings slider adjusts both distances, and a blacklist or whitelist controls which entity types are affected. Client and server both need it, because the tracking distance is applied on the server and the rendering distance on the client. The source is published under the MIT License, with a license file and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Entity rendering distance

Caps how far entities are drawn on the client, which directly affects client performance.

  2. Entity tracking distance

Sets how far the server sends information about entities to clients, which affects server and network load.

  3. Per-type settings

Each entity type can get its own distances, so hostile mobs and neutral animals can be handled differently.

  4. Blacklist and whitelist

Entity types can be added to a list to exclude them from the limits or to restrict the limits to a chosen set.
