Packet Fixer

by TonimatasDEV

Packet Fixer targets three kinds of network trouble: oversized NBT tags, packets that exceed protocol limits and connection timeouts.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.12.2 – 26.3

What it does

The mod addresses a set of errors that appear in the log when a packet, an NBT tag or a payload is larger than the game allows. Examples include an NBT tag that cannot be read because its allocation exceeds the limit, a compressed packet whose size passes the protocol maximum, and a chunk packet that tries to take too much memory on read. The fixes apply to the networking code rather than to gameplay, so worlds and items stay unchanged.

Installation is optional on the client and the server, and the project is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with builds covering 1.12.2 – 26.3 across 38 release versions. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker. The author also notes that the project covers recipe, tag and related problems through a separate mod.

Key features

  1. Oversized NBT handling

Reads of NBT tags that exceed the allocation limit are handled so the error no longer stops the connection.

  2. Packet size limits

Packets that are too big or badly compressed for the protocol maximum are dealt with instead of failing the session.

  3. Payload size checks

Custom payloads that go over the byte limits are addressed, which covers both the megabyte and kilobyte cases.

  4. Timeout reduction

Connection timeouts caused by large packets are reduced, so long transfers finish more often.

  5. Broad loader support

One project covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with game versions 1.12.2 – 26.3 on the release list.
