Dynamic Clouds

by mobiusmeansbusiness

Dynamic Clouds replaces Minecraft's flat cloud sheet with three-dimensional clouds that drift, change shape and follow the weather above the player.

What it does

Weather decides which types appear, so clear skies, rain and thunderstorms each look different, and the sky fades smoothly from one state to the next. The clouds are rendered on the GPU and are meant to keep the whole sky running smoothly.

A Realistic Mode places each cloud type at a true real-world height and size, with one block as one metre. Low clouds sit low and spread flat, cirrus rides high as wisps, and cumulonimbus climbs towers a kilometre tall. Dynamic Skies allows several weather patterns to coexist in the same sky, so a heavy band of rain may roll across one half while loose clouds drift above the other half. Everything drifts with the wind, clouds flow around terrain instead of clipping through it, and the wind sound rises and falls as clouds pass.

Dynamic Clouds is client-side only, so only the client needs it, and it requires Fabric API, Mod Menu and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL). The mod is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 26.3 and earlier builds, 1.20.1 – 26.3, and is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Seven cloud types

Each cloud type has its own shape, altitude and behaviour, and the sky is built from a mix of them.

  2. Weather-driven sky

Clear, rain, thunder and overcast skies are set by the weather, and transitions between them fade gradually.

  3. Cloud magnifier

A magnifier from 1x to 10x scales the clouds, which helps with compatibility for players using a larger terrain mod.

  4. Live tuning

Coverage, thickness and detail can be changed for each type while the world is running, using a slider.

Questions

Does Dynamic Clouds need to be installed on the server?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Which dependencies does Dynamic Clouds require?

Fabric API, Mod Menu and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) are required. Fabric API is needed because the mod runs on Fabric.

Does the mod work with Localized Weather?

The author notes that the mod is client-side unless Localized Weather is used alongside it, so the server may need it in that case.

What the author says

Cloud Types - The sky is built from cumulus, stratocumulus, stratus, altocumulus, nimbostratus, cumulonimbus and cirrus, each with a distinct shape and a natural altitude. - The weather decides which types appear. You can let it run on its own through sunny spells and building storms, or pin a single sky to study one…
