ddd's harder mobs

by dddanpppan

ddd's harder mobs scales the health, armor, weapons and effects of mobs to match how long a player takes to kill them, so tougher encounters follow stronger play.

What it does

Mobs scale in the vanilla way: as the player progresses, their health, armor, weapons and effects increase through a leveling system. The scaling is continuous, with discrete stages, and it is driven by data so that new scaling rules can be added without code. Multiplayer is handled by scaling each mob from the level of the closest player when it spawns, and the scaling reflects that player's own performance.

The system adjusts in both directions. When a player dies and loses equipment, the scaling can drop so mobs do not stay overpowered. Player damage is the only limit on scaling, and the mod can also support mob attribute levels above 1024 when the separate AttributeFix mod is present. The mod adds no new mob AI, entities or items, and a vanilla client can join a server without it installed on the client side.

The mod requires a server install: the server needs it, and players may add it, so the scaling runs on the server. It is published for Forge and NeoForge, for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and is open source under the MIT License. The initial design targeted an unofficial TaCZ port for 1.21.1 NeoForge, and datapacks or mods that alter existing entities' health are not affected by the scaling.

Key features

  1. Continuous mob scaling

Mob health, armor, weapons and effects rise in discrete stages as the player's performance improves.

  2. Time-to-kill based leveling

The leveling system is driven mainly by how long it takes the player to kill mobs, so late weapons do not trivialize them.

  3. Two-way adjustment

Performance can drop as well as rise, so a dying player faces weaker mobs and does not stay locked behind them.

  4. Multiplayer friendly scaling

Each mob takes its level from the closest player at spawn, and that player's own performance sets the result.

Multiplayer Bosses is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and runs client and server on 1.20.1 – 1.21.1. Simple Scaling needs a server install with the client optional, is MIT licensed and is available for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt on 1.20.5 – 1.21.1, so it also reaches Fabric players. ddd's harder mobs also needs only a server install and is open source under the MIT License.

What the author says

This mod introduces a new leveling system that dynamically scales mobs depending on the performance of the player. Through the leveling system, mobs can spawn with more health, better armor, and effects. Predominantly, the leveling system is based off of the time-to-kill for mobs, and adjusts as the player survives…
