Dash's Custom Background Music Mod

by Dash_Ketch Coding

Dash's Custom Background Music Mod lets a player replace the vanilla soundtrack with their own MP3 files, played through the game's music system.

NeoForgeClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21.1

What it does

Players upload MP3 files and the mod plays them as background music in place of Minecraft's native tracks. Because the mod takes over the vanilla music engine, default game music does not overlap with the custom tracks. No conversion step is described: an MP3 file can be added directly, and only MP3 is supported for now, with other formats planned later.

Custom playlists can be organized, and each track has its own volume slider, so a quiet ambient song and a louder boss theme can be balanced separately. Volume buttons update the audio level in real time while a song plays. The mod is built to blend with the game's interface rather than look like an add-on, and the original Minecraft music can be heard again by changing the setup.

The mod is released for NeoForge 1.21.1 only, with the latest file 1.0.12 for 1.21.1, published on 2026-05-30. It runs on the client alone, so servers and other players do not need it. It is not open source; the source code is public, but the license is All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Total replacement

The mod overrides the native music system so only the custom tracks play in the game's soundtrack slots.

  2. MP3 playback

MP3 files are read by a built-in decoder, so tracks can be added without converting them first.

  3. Per-track volume

Each song has a volume slider that can be adjusted while it plays, to keep calm music subtle and combat music loud.

  4. Custom playlists

Tracks can be grouped into several playlists, so different moods or biomes can use different sets of songs.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits single-player players who want their own music in the game and do not need it on a server, since only the client runs it.

How it compares

Full comparison

Custom Discs runs on client and server for 1.21.1, so the server and every player must both install it, and it is open source under the MIT License. Music Player Mod For Minecraft is not open source and is licensed under the MIT License; it runs on client or server optionally for 1.21.1. True Music is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and also needs both sides for 1.21.1. Dash's Custom Background Music Mod is the only one of these that is client-side only and not open source.
