converse

by ax

Converse changes how chat messages look on the client, adding rounded corners, animated input and messages, images and GIFs rendered inline, and a tooltip-only mode.

What it does

Converse focuses on the chat experience. Its options control the chat width, rounded corners, a smart chat background, and animations for the input field and for messages as they appear. Images and GIFs posted in chat can be rendered inline, and a tooltip-only mode keeps media out of the message list until a player hovers over it. Tags that mark a message as unsigned or unverified can be hidden, so the chat reads more cleanly.

Converse is a client-side only mod, so only the client needs it and servers run without it. It requires Fabric API and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL), and it is open source under the MIT License. Builds exist for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with game versions 1.14.4 – 26.3 and snapshot builds published. The latest file is 0.2.1 for 26.3, dated 2026-10-04.

Key features

  1. Rounded chat corners

The chat window can be drawn with rounded corners and an adjustable width.

  2. Smart chat background

The background behind chat messages adapts to the surrounding content to keep text readable.

  3. Input and message animations

Animations play when the input field opens and when new messages are rendered in the chat.

  4. Inline images and GIFs

Images and GIFs in chat can be rendered inline, or shown only as a tooltip when tooltip-only mode is enabled.
