Contents Director

by LiquidCatMofu

Contents Director is a Library for Forge and NeoForge that installs files into a modpack at runtime, so pack authors can fetch provider-hosted files that cannot be bundled with the pack.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.7.10 – 26.3

What it does

The mod targets modpack authors who need a repeatable way to fetch optional external files. Files are fetched from direct URLs, checked against configured hashes, and staged before the live installation is committed. A failed hash check or failed staging stops the change, so an existing working file is never overwritten. Archives can be extracted, and old files can be superseded, disabled, moved, renamed or deleted.

Behaviour is driven by configuration. A bundled remote configuration can be loaded, entries can be filtered by client or server side, and optional components can be offered for players to select. Extraction and file operations validate paths so nothing escapes the intended installation directory. The project is distributed as a combined shaded artifact, and the recommended build covers both LaunchWrapper-era and ModLauncher-era Forge.

Forge 1.7.10 – 1.12.2 needs a launch argument for the LaunchWrapper integration, while newer Forge builds pick up the integration on their own. Builds exist for 1.7.10 – 26.3 across 76 release versions, with v1.2.0-beta for 26.3 as the latest file for both Forge and NeoForge. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source; the environment is client and server, so both sides need it.

Key features

  1. Direct-URL fetching

Files are pulled from direct URLs described in configuration entries, with a minimal example entry format provided.

  2. Hash verification

Configured hashes are checked before any replacement, and a mismatch blocks the change.

  3. Staged installation

Fetched files are staged and validated before the live installation is committed, protecting working files during updates.

  4. Optional components

Modpacks can offer user-selectable components, and entries can be filtered by client or server side.

Questions

Which loaders does Contents Director support?

It is published for Forge and NeoForge. The 1.7.10 – 1.12.2 Forge builds need a launch argument for the LaunchWrapper integration.

Does Contents Director have to be installed on both sides?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Does Contents Director protect existing files during an update?

Yes. Fetched files are staged and hash-checked first, and a failed check stops the replacement before any working file is overwritten.
