Colorful Subtitles

by haykam

Colorful Subtitles recolors subtitle text by sound category, so a player can tell at a glance which kind of sound is playing.

What it does

Each subtitle line takes a color that depends on the category of the sound it describes. Once the mod is installed, subtitles change color automatically, and no setup is needed to start seeing the difference. The colors are fixed per category, which lets players learn the mapping over time.

The mod is a Fabric client mod. It requires the Fabric mod loader and is only needed on the player's own installation, since servers have no subtitles to color. Its files go into the mods folder alongside other Fabric mods. Builds cover 26 release versions, and the latest file, 1.7.0, is built for 1.21.8.

Colorful Subtitles is released under the MIT License and is open source, with the source code and issue tracker publicly available. The first file was published on 2022-02-03, and the most recent update was on 2025-06-21.

Key features

  1. Category-based colors

Subtitle text is colored by sound category, so ambient, hostile and player sounds can be told apart while reading.

  2. Automatic coloring

The colors apply as soon as the mod is installed, without a separate configuration step.

  3. Distinct shades

Categories use contrasting shades such as dark purple and dark red, so the colors stay separable in the subtitle display.

  4. Simple installation

The mod is placed in the mods folder with the other Fabric mods and runs from there.
