Chunk By Chunk
by immortius
Chunk By Chunk begins a world from a single 16x16 chunk column, and players can grow it by adding further chunks over time.
What it does
The mod starts each new world as one chunk. Missing chunks can then be filled in later, either as empty air that becomes a skyworld, or with bedrock that seals the edge. Two generation options control how the added chunks are made, and an additional chunk can be created once the player has the matching resource.
Key World Cores are the resource that drives growth. A World Forge refines raw dirt and stone into World Cores, and those cores are used to build the next chunks. Mod Menu can be used to open the settings screen from the main menu, and the same options are also written to the config file generated in the defaultconfig folder when the game first runs.
Installation has the same requirements on each loader. Fabric builds need Mod Menu, and Just Enough Items (JEI) is an optional companion. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the code is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Single-chunk start
A new world begins as one 16x16 column, and further chunks are added as the world is expanded.
Two generation options
Each added chunk can be generated as empty space or as bedrock, which seals the outer edge of the world.
World Forge refining
A World Forge turns raw dirt and stone into World Cores, which are needed to create more chunks.
Settings before world creation
Options are reachable from the main menu and through a config file, so they can be set before a world is made.

How it compares
Random Chunks is server-side only, runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20 – 1.21, and is open source under the MIT License, so players can join without installing it. Chunk Save Fix is a Fabric mod for 1.20.1 that the client and server both run, and it is not open source. Random 9 chunks is a NeoForge mod for 1.21.1 that also needs the client and server, and it is not open source either.

But there is still hope - perhaps the world can still be repaired - chunk by chunk. Chunk By Chunk is a mod that starts the world with just a…
