Cenozoicraft
by paleopunk
Cenozoicraft brings Cenozoic animals such as the Smilodon and Woolly Mammoth into the world, and adds prehistoric tools and hunting to the early game.
What it does
Cenozoicraft is an ecology-focused world generation mod for Forge on 1.20.1. It adds new biomes, including the Mammoth Steppe, a cold, flat landscape with little plant cover where many of the new mobs live. Larch trees mark the terrain as a new neutral-warm wood type. The Smilodon is native to its own biome and is easiest to spot by its growl, while most of the new mobs fight back when provoked, and many can be tamed.
Many animals from both vanilla and the mod drop new items such as hides, skulls and teeth, which become materials for tools and armor. Jumbo hide and Jumbo bones come from the larger mobs, such as the Paraceratherium, Mammoth and Woolly Rhinoceros. Animal remains can be turned into decorative blocks or crafting components. Traces of civilization generate as small homes built from mammoth skin tarp and bone, and large graveyards hold many bones.
To start, place a leather knife on a crafting table to turn leather into sinew. Sinew replaces string in most recipes and is used to bind weapon heads to sticks. Cenozoicraft requires Curios API and Geckolib, and Just Enough Items (JEI) is optional but recommended for viewing recipes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. It is released under the MIT License and is not open source. Files are published for 1.20.1 only, with 1.3.0 as the latest Forge file.

How it compares
Unearthed Journey is a Forge mod for 1.20.1 that works on either side, and neither side needs it. It is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. DragN's Livestock Overhaul: Permafrost is also a Forge 1.20.1 mod, but both the server and every player must run it, and it is under All rights reserved. Diversity of Life: Ecology & Zoo Simulation shares that client and server requirement and is likewise All rights reserved and not open source.
