Better Resource Pack Sorting
by mrmelon54
Better Resource Pack Sorting changes how the resource packs list in the options menu is ordered and labeled, and lets pack authors set custom display names.
What it does
Players who run many resource packs can reorder the list so packs appear in a clearer sequence. Sorting is case-insensitive, so uppercase and lowercase names sit next to each other, and formatting codes in names are ignored so they do not throw off the order.
A pack can set a display name in its pack.mcmeta file through a new field, overriding the plain file name, and the name can carry custom styling. Holding Alt while hovering over an entry reveals the original file name. Builds cover 1.19 – 1.20.4, released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source is public. The mod runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it.
Key features
Sorted resource pack list
The available resource packs are shown in an order that the mod controls, which keeps long lists easier to scan.
Custom display names
Pack authors can add a name field to pack.mcmeta, and the list shows that name with custom styling in place of the zip file name.
Original file name on hover
Holding Alt while hovering over a resource pack reveals its original file name, useful when several packs share a display name.
Case and formatting handling
Uppercase and lowercase names are sorted together, and formatting codes are ignored when comparing names.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Large pack collections
Players who keep many resource packs installed can find a specific pack faster in the sorted list.
Packs with readable names
Pack makers who want a friendlier label than a file name can set one in pack.mcmeta and see it in the menu.
Who it’s for: Players with long resource pack lists and resource pack authors who want custom display names. The client needs it; server owners have no reason to install it.
How it compares
ImageTitles is a client-side only Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt mod under the MIT License, open source, for 1.20.1 – 1.21.11, and it changes how pack images and titles appear. Transparent is also client-side only and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, with builds for 1.16.5 – 1.21.5 on the same four loaders, but it addresses transparency rather than pack ordering. Better Resource Pack Sorting covers 1.19 – 1.20.4 on Fabric, Forge and Quilt.
