Better Christmas Chests

by mrmelon54

Better Christmas Chests changes the textures of chests, Ender chests and trapped chests so they look like Christmas presents during the holiday season.

FabricForgeQuiltClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.19 – 1.20.4

What it does

The mod replaces the textures used by regular chests, trapped chests, Ender chests, minecart chests and the chests on horses, zombie horses and skeleton horses. The vanilla game uses one shared texture for these blocks, and the mod swaps it for a festive version. Its textures are also available as a set of assets under the chest boat folder, so a pack maker can recolor them.

Installation is a drop-in: place the file in the mods folder of a Fabric, Forge or Quilt setup. On Fabric it requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it. Files exist for 1.19 – 1.20.4, with 1.0.1 for 1.20.4 as the latest build, published on 2024-01-19.

The author notes that the textures are simple and that a Christmas-only setting appeared in later builds, while a separate on/off switch for the feature arrived in a later release. The mod is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, is open source, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Festive chest textures

Regular, trapped and Ender chests are drawn with a Christmas look instead of the vanilla texture.

  2. Mounted and minecart chests

Chests on minecarts, horses, zombie horses and skeleton horses use the same Christmas texture.

  3. Season-only setting

The Christmas textures apply during the holiday period, and a switch turns the feature off in later releases.

  4. Replaceable texture assets

The textures are stored as separate assets in the mod's chest folder, so they can be swapped by a resource pack.

How it compares

Full comparison

Disable Christmas Chests is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, is client-side only and covers 1.20.1 – 1.21.11 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, so it overlaps with this mod in environment and loader support. Ender Christmas is also client-side only and open source under the MIT License, but it is Fabric-only and built for 1.18.1 – 1.19. Christmas Tower is server required with an optional client and is not open source, so it works differently on a server.

Questions

Does Better Christmas Chests need Fabric API?

On Fabric it does. Fabric Loader and Fabric API are both required there. Forge and Quilt builds do not list Fabric API as a requirement.

Does a server need Better Christmas Chests?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Which game versions have files?

Files exist for 1.19, 1.19.1, 1.19.2, 1.19.3, 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3 and 1.20.4, with the latest file being 1.0.1 for 1.20.4.

Can the chest textures be changed?

Yes. The textures are separate assets in the mod, so a resource pack can replace them.

In the catalog

Better Christmas Chests is one of 12,078 Decoration mods on ModsFinder, and one of 6,982 Decoration mods for Fabric. 13,907 mods support Minecraft 1.20.4.

What the author says

Changes the textures used for Enderchests and trapped chests at Christmas as vanilla uses the same texture. My textures are probably trash but I'm a programmer not an artist.
