Better Caravans

by Nikrecs

Better Caravans sends traveling merchant caravans across the wilderness between villages, and players can trade with them, defend them or rob them.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT License1.19.2 – 26.3

What it does

Caravans spawn as merchant groups that explore the land and travel toward nearby villages. Their animals follow the biome: camels in hot regions, llamas in temperate areas and mules in cold ones. Pack animals carry chests of loot that a player can take after a caravan is stopped. Each caravan receives a randomized selection of trades drawn from a datapack-driven trade pool.

Raiders can ambush a caravan that stays near a player for long enough, turning a peaceful encounter into a fight. Merchants that survive an attack reward the players who helped with experience and temporary trade discounts. Abandoned caravan stops also generate through the world, with barrels that hold useful resources for travelers who explore. Advancements track discovering, trading with and defending caravans.

The mod runs on the client and on the server, so both sides need it installed. Better Caravans is published for Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.19.2, 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 26.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3, and it is released under the MIT License. It is not open source.

Key features

  1. Traveling merchant caravans

Merchant groups roam between villages and wander through the wilderness, so players can meet them on the road.

  2. Biome-aware animals and loot

Camels, llamas and mules match the climate, and the chests they carry hold loot suited to each biome.

  3. Mini-raids and defense rewards

Raiders may ambush a nearby caravan, and surviving merchants reward the players who defended them with experience and discounts.

  4. Datapack trade pool

Trades are set in JSON files under data/bettercaravans/caravan_trades, where trades can be added, removed, rebalanced or fully replaced.

  5. Configurable commands and reloads

A config option enables admin and debug commands, and on NeoForge a normal reload applies changes to the caravan trade files.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who want roaming traders and raids in the wilderness, and server owners who want to shape the trade pool with datapacks. Installing it on both the client and the server is required.

Questions

Does Better Caravans need to be installed on both sides?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which loaders does Better Caravans support?

The mod is published for Forge and NeoForge. The latest Forge file is 1.1.2 for 1.20.1, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.1.2 for 26.3.

How can the trades be changed?

Trades are defined in JSON datapack files under data/bettercaravans/caravan_trades, so the default pool can be altered without modifying the mod.
