BagTag

by owlycode

BagTag is a Cursed data pack and resource pack that changes how villagers respond when a player drops wool near them, so that owls appear instead.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalAll rights reserved1.21.4

What it does

When a player drops wool in front of a villager, the villager turns into an owl. The change is applied by a data pack that is installed in a world, and a matching resource pack supplies the owl appearance. The project is distributed as a set of zip files rather than as a loader mod, and its Minecraft version must match the data pack exactly.

Installation takes three steps. The data pack zip goes into the datapacks folder of the world, and the resource pack zip, which is provided alongside it, goes into the resourcepacks folder of the .minecraft directory. Players then enter the world and test the change. The author made the data pack for personal use and chose to publish it.

Because it is a data pack, BagTag is listed for server platforms rather than for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt. It is required on the server, and a client may optionally add the resource pack to see the owl textures. BagTag is for 1.21.4 only, and it is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Wool turns villagers into owls

Dropping wool near a villager converts that villager into an owl, a playful effect that changes the village's inhabitants.

  2. Installed as a data pack

The behavior is delivered through a data pack, so no loader-specific code is needed to run it on a server.

  3. Matching resource pack

A separate resource pack zip is provided alongside the data pack to supply the owl appearance on the client.

  4. Version-locked files

The data pack and resource pack are built for 1.21.4 and must match that exact Minecraft version.

How it compares

Full comparison

Owls Mod is a NeoForge mod for 1.21.4 – 1.21.8 that runs on both the client and the server, and it is released under All rights reserved. Lookme is a server-side mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt covering 1.19 – 26.3, so players join without installing it, and it is also released under All rights reserved. BagTag differs from both in being a data pack, not a loader mod, and in targeting only 1.21.4.

Questions

Does BagTag need a specific loader?

No. BagTag is distributed as a data pack and resource pack, so it is not installed through Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt. The Minecraft version must be 1.21.4.

Does the server need BagTag installed?

Yes. It is required on the server and optional for players. The client may optionally add the resource pack for the owl appearance.

How is the data pack installed in a world?

Exit the world, open the datapacks folder in the world's save folder, and place the bagtag zip file there. Then enter the world again.
