Audition

by Tasuposed

Audition is a Fabric client mod that thins out sound in busy areas by dropping distant, low-priority and duplicate sounds before they reach the game's limited sound channels.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT License1.20.1 – 26.2

What it does

Minecraft has a fixed number of sound channels, and noisy areas such as mob farms, explosions and large redstone builds can use them all up. Audition checks each sound request before vanilla allocates a channel. Sounds within 8 blocks are always played, and sounds beyond 32 blocks are always dropped. Between those distances, a sound is dropped with a chance that depends on its priority, so the nearest and most important sounds stay clear. Repeated copies of the same sound in one tick are cut as well.

Audition only changes sound on the client, so a server does not need it and players can join a server without installing anything. Its distances and weights can be set in the config, and a master toggle turns the mod off entirely, which makes sounds behave as vanilla. Audition requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API, and it works with the Fabric builds listed for 1.20.1 – 26.2. The MIT License covers the code, but the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Distance-based culling

Sounds within 8 blocks always play, while those beyond 32 blocks are always dropped by default.

  2. Priority-weighted drops

Between 8 and 32 blocks, lower-priority sounds are dropped more often, and the chance scales with distance.

  3. Duplicate sound removal

The same sound already played in a tick is not repeated, which keeps overlapping effects from stacking.

  4. Configurable thresholds

The culling distance and how readily low-priority sounds are dropped can be tuned in the config file.

  5. Master toggle

A single switch turns Audition off so every sound behaves as it does in vanilla.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who run large farms, explosive or redstone-heavy builds, or who play in crowded areas and find the sound mix cluttered. Servers do not need it, so it suits single-player and multiplayer clients alike.

SoundAdjuster is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.21.11 – 26.1 on Fabric. Noisy No More is not open source, released under All rights reserved, and covers 1.21.4 – 1.21.5 on Fabric. Both are client-side only, as Audition is, but they target different version ranges, and Audition covers 1.20.1 – 26.2 with the MIT License.

Questions

Does Audition need Fabric API?

Yes. Audition requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API, so both must be installed in the mods folder.

Does a server need Audition?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Can the culling distance be changed?

Yes. The culling distance and how readily low-priority sounds are dropped are set in the config, and a master toggle disables the mod.
