Attribute Base Modifier

by whyvo

Attribute Base Modifier lets a data pack change the default base value of an attribute on selected mobs, such as the maximum health of zombies.

FabricForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20 – 1.21.8

What it does

Rules are JSON files placed in a data pack, and each rule file names the attribute to change, the new default value, and the mobs it applies to. Mobs can be picked with an include list, an exclude list, or both, and an ID can match an exact entity or a tag that starts with a given prefix. A mob that does not have a default value for the chosen attribute is skipped without an error.

The mod runs on the server alone, so players can join without installing it, and a server owner only needs Fabric API as a required dependency on Fabric. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across the range 1.20 – 1.21.8. The code is licensed under the MIT License and is open source, and public links to the source and the issue tracker are available.

Key features

  1. Data pack rules

Each rule is a JSON file in the data pack that sets an attribute base value for a chosen group of mobs.

  2. Include and exclude filters

Mobs can be selected by exact ID or by tag, and excluded mobs are left untouched even when they match an include entry.

  3. Enable and disable rules

A command turns a loaded rule on or off, and rules reset to their defined default after a reload.

  4. Debugging command

A debugging command shows the state of rules, which helps check whether a rule was registered under the expected ID.

  5. Reload behaviour

Rules reload with the other data pack contents, and a reload command applies changes without restarting the world, though mobs already summoned keep their old attributes unless recreated.

Questions

Does Attribute Base Modifier need Fabric API?

Fabric API is required on Fabric. Forge and NeoForge builds do not list it as a dependency.

Do players need to install the mod?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

Why does a summoned mob keep its old attributes after a reload?

Rules reload with the data pack, but a mob summoned before the reload keeps the attributes it was created with. Recreating the mob applies the new default values.
