VillagerGPT

by tjhorner

Villagers on a server gain a conversation option through VillagerGPT, a Fabric mod whose AI villagers can talk, haggle and propose trades.

FabricMIT LicenseOpen source1.19 – 26.2

What it does

Each villager is assigned one personality from a list in the config file, and that personality shapes how it answers. Its profession is chosen at random, and the villager is aware of the world around it: the time of day, world information, the player, its reputation score and its own name, including custom names. Players talk to a villager by chatting with it, and the conversation is powered by the same kind of large language model that ChatGPT uses. Players can haggle, and a villager can propose a trade that opens the trading menu just as a right-click would.

The mod is licensed under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code published publicly. It needs the Fabric loader, Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin, and it is published only for Fabric. Files cover 1.19 – 26.2, with six release versions, including 1.19, 1.19.1, 1.19.2, 1.19.3, 1.19.4 and 26.2. The latest file is 2.1-fabric for 26.2, dated 2026-08-07 on the beta channel.

Key features

  1. Villager conversations

Players talk with villagers through a language model, and conversations start and continue without a command.

  2. Haggling and trades

A villager can settle better deals after a conversation, and can offer a trade through the normal trading screen.

  3. Personality list

The list of personalities in config.yml sets which archetypes villagers are given, and entries can be added, removed or edited.

  4. Villager actions

Villagers perform actions through tool or function calling, which requires a model that supports it.

Questions

Does VillagerGPT need an OpenAI API key?

Yes. The plugin needs an OpenAI API key, which goes under openai-key in config.yml. The openai-base-url setting can point to a compatible endpoint, such as a hosted service or a local model server.

Which model should be set in the config?

The default is gpt-4o-mini. Whichever model is chosen must support tool or function calling, because villagers propose trades and perform actions through it.

Does Fabric API have to be installed?

Yes. Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin are both required dependencies and must be installed alongside VillagerGPT.
