Players on older Java Edition clients can join newer servers through ViaBackwards, a Fabric mod that translates protocol data in the backwards direction.
What it does
ViaBackwards handles the older side of a connection, so clients from earlier game versions can reach servers running newer releases. It needs ViaVersion, which is required, and it works on either side of a connection, so neither the client nor the server has to run it. Fabric builds are listed for game versions 1.10 – 26.3 across 60 release versions, with 5.12.2+658 for 26.3 as the latest file on the beta channel, published 2026-10-12.
Fabric players normally get ViaBackwards through ViaFabric. That loader bundles a version of the mod, and an installed copy can override the bundled one by going into the mods folder. ViaRewind and ViaAprilFools are required by two other catalog mods, and ViaRewind is also an optional dependency. The mod is also published for Paper, Folia, Sponge, Velocity and BungeeCord. Depending on the platform and version, ViaVersion is needed.
The project requires Java 17, and older Java 8 downgraded builds are offered as a last resort. The mod is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, is open source, and has public links to its source code and issue tracker. It was first published on 2023-08-10 and last updated on 2026-10-12.
