Vanilla Weather Plus

by joseccraft_3

VanillaWeatherPlus adds tornadoes, hurricanes and other weather events to NeoForge for 1.21.1, written to sit alongside vanilla gameplay.

NeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.21.1

What it does

Weather events appear in plains, oceans, deserts and badlands. Plains storms can lift entities and spin them around as they cross the map, while larger events reach wider areas over ocean biomes. Green Rain is a slime-colored rain that appears with low probability and speeds up crop growth. A huge sand cloud rolling over deserts carries strong winds, and during it visibility drops so far that the view beyond a few blocks is lost.

The mod gives the default snowstorm fog a new look, and cold weather can freeze a player to death unless they wear suitable clothing. Damage from tornadoes is real: trees and blocks they destroy are not gone for good, because the affected leaves and blocks regenerate over time. The author states that the weather mechanics are meant to leave vanilla terrain generation and biome balance alone, so the mod does not affect custom terrain generation mods, and biome-adding mods are not recommended alongside it.

Installation needs Vanilla Backport. The server and every player need the mod installed. Files are published for NeoForge only, for 1.21.1, with 2.0.0 as the latest file from 2026-10-14. The code is All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Tornadoes and hurricanes

Tornadoes and hurricanes move across the map and damage the blocks and trees in their path.

  2. Regenerating damage

Leaves and blocks broken by weather phenomena regenerate over time, so forests are not permanently destroyed.

  3. Green Rain

A low-probability slime-colored rain that makes crops grow faster while it falls.

  4. Desert sandstorms

Huge sand clouds cross deserts and badlands with strong winds and near-zero visibility.

  5. Cold and fog

A revised snowstorm fog makes the view harder to see through, and exposure can freeze an unprotected player.

How it compares

Full comparison

Weather Storms & Tornadoes is the closest overlap, with Forge and NeoForge files for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 and All rights reserved licensing, so it is not open source. ProtoManly's Weather is a NeoForge client and server mod for 1.21.1 under All rights reserved, also not open source. Natural Regrowth for ProtoManly's Weather is open source under the MIT License and targets the same 1.21.1 build, so it fills the regrowth role instead of adding weather events.

Questions

Does VanillaWeatherPlus need Vanilla Backport?

Yes. Vanilla Backport is a required dependency and must be installed alongside the mod on NeoForge for 1.21.1.

Does the server need the mod?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Are weather-damaged blocks lost permanently?

No. Leaves and blocks broken by the weather regenerate over time, so a tornado does not destroy a forest forever.
