Universal Perms

by MattiDragon

Universal Perms gives server owners permission nodes for commands and for several vanilla checks that normally require operator level 2.

What it does

Universal Perms adds permission nodes for commands and vanilla checks that otherwise fall back to a fixed permission level. Each node can be granted or denied separately, so a server can allow one command without making the player an operator. Two kinds of nodes exist for commands: a use node controls whether the command runs, and a view node controls whether it appears to the player. Setting a use node to true overrides the command's normal requirements, and setting it to false blocks access for everyone who holds it. The mod also handles subcommands, so a player can be allowed some of them while others stay hidden.

The mod covers a range of vanilla checks, including querying block and entity NBT data, changing the difficulty and locking it, a creative-mode level-two admin check, and gamemode switching from 1.21.11 on. A forced permission level node can give a player a vanilla permission level directly. Universal Perms is server-side only, so players join without installing it, and it requires Fabric API. It is released under the MIT License and is open source. Files cover 1.19.2 – 26.2 on Fabric and Quilt.

Key features

  1. Command use and view nodes

Separate use and view permissions let a server allow a command, hide it from autocompletion, or do both.

  2. Subcommand control

Vanilla commands can be restricted down to their subcommands and arguments, so a single branch can be granted alone.

  3. Vanilla check nodes

Nodes cover block and entity NBT queries, difficulty changes, and the creative-mode admin check that vanilla ties to level two.

  4. Forced permission level

A meta node sets a vanilla permission level for a player, and the mod's own level defaults remain in place otherwise.

How it compares

Full comparison

Switcher is client-side only and is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, with files for 1.19 – 1.21.1 on Fabric and Quilt. DailyPlaytimeCap is server-side only, open source under the MIT License, and published for Fabric across 1.21.9 – 26.3. Configure Use Permissions is server-side only, uses the MIT License and covers only 26.1.2 on Fabric, so Universal Perms covers a wider version range.

Questions

Does Universal Perms need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and the mod is published for Fabric and Quilt.

Can the mod be installed on one side only?

Yes. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Why do the use and view nodes both exist for commands?

A use node controls whether a command runs, and a view node controls whether it is shown to the player, so each can be set on its own.

What the author says

Now we get to setting up the permissions. This mod provides two permissions for each command, one beginning with universal_perms:use/ and one with universal_perms:view/. If set, the use permissions overrides the commands normal requirements making anyone with it set to true able to use the command while denying…
