Too Many Players

by Feytox

With Too Many Players installed, a crowd in view is drawn with far fewer elements, which raises frame rate on the client.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.2 – 1.21.1

What it does

The mod turns off rendering for other players, leaving only their heads visible, along with their armor and held items. Fewer elements are drawn each frame, so FPS rises in crowded places, and players stay distinguishable by their heads. It is a client-side optimization, so only the player's own game needs the mod.

A Hiding Areas option applies hiding rules depending on the distance to a player, and a whitelist keeps chosen players out of the optimization. Commands add, remove and list whitelisted names, clear empties the list, and a hideskin setting hides a player's skin. A SP potato preset suits single-player clients with weak hardware.

No required dependency is listed for Fabric. Mod Menu is optional and adds a settings screen. The mod bundles MidnightLib internally. Too Many Players is open source under the MIT License and has files for Fabric covering 1.18.2 – 1.21.1, with 1.21-1.1.5 for 1.21.1 as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Hidden player rendering

Other players are drawn without their bodies, armor or held items, leaving only the head visible.

  2. Hiding Areas by distance

An optional mode applies hiding rules based on how far away a player stands.

  3. Player whitelist

Players on the whitelist are skipped by the optimization, so they remain fully visible.

  4. Chat-style commands

Commands add, remove, list and clear whitelisted players, and hideskin hides a player's skin.

  5. Weak-PC preset

The SP potato preset adjusts the settings for single-player clients on lower-end hardware.

Use cases

Crowded spawn areas

Players gathering at a spawn point or market can keep frame rate steady when many avatars are in view.

Large multiplayer servers

Players on busy servers can hide crowds while still identifying nearby friends by their heads.

Who it’s for: The mod suits players on Fabric whose frame rate drops when many other players are in view, and who are willing to show only heads in exchange.

Questions

Does Too Many Players need to be installed on the server?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Does the mod work with Mod Menu?

Mod Menu is an optional dependency. Installing it adds a settings screen, but the mod runs without it.

Which game versions have files for Too Many Players?

Files exist for Fabric across 13 release versions, covering 1.18.2 – 1.21.1.

Can a whitelisted player still be hidden?

Whitelisted players are ignored by the optimization, so their rendering is not hidden during it.

What the author says

Too Many Players is a rough client optimization mod to increase FPS when there are a lot of players in your field of vision. The mod allows you to completely turn off the rendering of players, their armor, objects in their hands and bodies, except for the head. Thus, the game draws fewer elements, which allows you to…
