Cabin Fever

by toasterpanic

Cabin Fever is a Forge game mechanics mod that penalizes long stretches spent indoors and underground, with a status effect that builds up over time.

ForgeClient and serverCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.01.16.5 – 1.19.4

What it does

Staying inside or underground for long periods raises a Cabin Fever risk value. When the risk gets too high, the player is afflicted with the Cabin Fever status effect, which brings unwelcome effects such as interrupted sleep and disabled fast travel methods. Eating stews lowers the risk, and spending a full in-game day outside, about 20 minutes of real time, brings it back to zero.

The mod is inspired by The Long Dark and suits survival worlds and servers where players want a reason to leave their bases. It pairs well with a temperature mod such as Tough Nails or Cold Sweat, which make cold and exposure part of the same pressure. It runs on the client and the server, so both sides need the Forge build.

Cabin Fever is published for Forge only, with builds for 1.16.5, 1.19.2 and 1.19.4. The code is not open source; it is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license. The latest file, a0.16 for 1.19.4, is an alpha build dated 2025-01-06.

Key features

  1. Indoor penalty

Time spent indoors and underground increases the Cabin Fever risk until the player goes outside.

  2. Cabin Fever status effect

A new status effect is applied once the risk gets too high, and it interrupts sleep and disables fast travel.

  3. Stew relief

Eating stews reduces the Cabin Fever risk, so food gives the player a way to manage the penalty.

  4. Daylight reset

Staying outside for one full in-game day, about 20 minutes of real time, brings the risk back to zero.

Use cases

Survival bases

Players who build underground bases get a reason to go outside on a regular schedule.

Pairing with temperature mods

Installed beside a temperature mod, the penalty joins cold and exposure as a second source of pressure.

Who it’s for: Survival players and server owners who want the time spent in shelter to carry a cost. The mod suits worlds built around exploration and underground work.

Questions

Does Cabin Fever need to be installed on the server?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which versions of Minecraft does Cabin Fever support?

Forge builds exist for 1.16.5, 1.19.2 and 1.19.4, and the latest file a0.16 targets 1.19.4.

How does a player get rid of Cabin Fever?

The risk must drop to 0, which happens after staying outside for one full in-game day, or the risk can be lowered by eating stews.
