Text Formatting Everywhere
by Potat369
Text Formatting Everywhere brings back the old section-sign formatting codes, so typed chat and sign text can carry colors and styles again.
What it does
Players add a formatting code by typing the section sign (§), then a code character, then the text to style. A code such as §1 switches the following text to blue. The mod restores this older method, which Minecraft's newer text components replaced for many uses.
The mod installs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt and covers 14 release versions, 1.20.5 – 1.21.11, with snapshot builds also published. Only the client needs it for the formatting to appear to that player, and the server may run it to make codes work there. The code is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public. The author notes that a server requiring the mod can be worked around by doubling the code, so §§11Hello is accepted without the mod.
Key features
Section-sign color codes
Typing § followed by a color code changes the color of the text that follows it in chat and similar input.
Style codes
Codes for bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and obfuscated text can be combined with colors in the same message.
Doubled-code bypass
Doubling the section sign, as in §§11Hello, lets formatting pass on a server that does not run the mod.
Snapshot support
Builds are published for snapshot versions as well as release versions, so testing on upcoming game updates is possible.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
1.21.x12 of 12 versions with builds
1.20.x2 of 2 versions with builds
This mod also publishes snapshot builds. Snapshots are not shown in the matrix.
Use cases
Colored chat on a server
Players who want colored messages can type formatting codes directly, without needing a separate chat interface.
Decorated signs and books
Text on signs or written in books can be styled using the same section-sign codes.
Who it’s for: Players who remember the old formatting codes and server owners who want them available in chat. Players on a server that does not run the mod can still use doubled codes.
How it compares
Book Formatting is a client-side only Fabric mod for 1.19.3 – 1.21.5 under CC0 1.0 Universal, so it changes only the player's own view. Text Animator is a client mod for 1.19.2 – 1.21.1 under the Apache License 2.0, and it covers the same four loaders, though it animates text rather than restoring codes. SkiesAnnouncements is server-side only, Fabric-only and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1.
