Suggestion Tweaker

by Velizar

When a player types a command, Suggestion Tweaker changes how the completion list is filtered and ordered, offering several matching modes instead of vanilla's single alphabetical list.

What it does

Suggestion Tweaker improves filtering and sorting of command suggestions. Results run from the strictest match to the loosest, and the vanilla game only sorts them alphabetically with no choice of filtering mode. Four modes are offered: a strict vanilla mode, a slightly loose mode that matches the input anywhere inside a suggestion, a loose mode that treats underscores as word separators, and a very loose mode that matches any suggestion containing every letter typed.

Suggestions fall into two groups. The first group, including functions, loot tables, item modifiers and predicates, is filtered on the server according to what the client has typed. The second group, including scoreboard criteria, colors and blocks, is filtered on the client. Because the server controls the first group, the mod includes a workaround that lets the client apply the new filtering on its own, so clients without the mod still receive better suggestions when the server runs it.

Players can install it on a single-player or multiplayer client, on a server, or on both, and neither side is required to have it. The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source and issue tracker are public. A companion library, Cloth Config API, must be present, while Mod Menu is optional and adds settings for case sensitivity and the filtering mode. Builds exist for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across game versions 1.18 – 1.21.11.

Key features

  1. Four filtering modes

Strict, slightly loose, loose and very loose modes control how strictly typed input must match a suggestion.

  2. Strictest-to-loosest ordering

Matching suggestions are listed from the closest match to the most distant one, not only alphabetically.

  3. Function and loot table filtering

Functions, loot tables, item modifiers and predicates are narrowed down as the player types, using the client's input.

  4. Scoreboard and color filtering

Scoreboard criteria, colors and blocks are narrowed down as the player types, without waiting for the server.

  5. Case sensitivity setting

Case sensitivity and the filtering mode can be changed in the configuration screen when Mod Menu is installed.

Use cases

Finding entries in long lists

Loose matching helps when a suggestion list is long and the exact name is hard to recall.

Writing data pack commands

Players and map makers working with functions, loot tables and predicates see filtered results when they type.

Who it’s for: Players who type many commands and data pack authors who work with long suggestion lists in Minecraft Java Edition.

How it compares

Full comparison

Sorted Enchantments is client-side only and works on 1.14 – 1.21.4 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt; it sorts enchantments rather than command suggestions. CreativeTabSearch is client-side only, published for 1.20 – 1.20.4 under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and searches creative tabs. Criteria Sync is server-side only, Fabric-only, and covers 1.20.2 – 26.2 under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later.

Questions

Does Suggestion Tweaker need Cloth Config API?

Yes. Cloth Config API is a required dependency and must be installed alongside the mod on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.

Do clients need the mod for better suggestions?

No. The mod is also a server mod and includes a workaround, so clients without it still receive the improved server-side filtering.

How are the filtering modes changed?

With Mod Menu installed, the case sensitivity and filtering mode can be changed in the configuration screen.
