Subtle Effects

by MincraftEinstein

Subtle Effects adds ambient particles and a few sounds to vanilla blocks, mobs and players, such as sparks on fire blocks, dust around glowstone and running clouds under feet.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient required, server optionalAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 26.3

What it does

Fire-related blocks including fire, campfires, candles and torches produce sparks, and burning entities show sparks, smoke and flames. Vanilla smoke is replaced with textures resembling campfire smoke. Villagers and players show snoring particles, slimes leave a trail behind them, and glowstone and redstone blocks emit dust. Allays and vexes give off magic particles, and shearing a sheep drops fluff.

Players and some mobs kick up running dust clouds, and mobs leave dust when they land on the ground. Players below three hearts hear a heartbeat, players below three hunger points hear a stomach growl, and wearing a mob head applies a spectator-style shader for that mob. Particle culling and a particle render distance setting help control how many particles a client draws. The configuration menu can switch each feature off, and dropped item particles can be turned off separately.

Subtle Effects requires Fabric API and Fzzy Config on Fabric, and Fzzy Config on Forge and NeoForge. Only the client needs it for the visuals, while a server can run without it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, covering game versions 1.20.1 – 26.3, and the code is licensed under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Fire and light particles

Fire blocks, campfires, candles and torches throw sparks, while glowstone and redstone blocks emit dust particles.

  2. Creature particles

Villagers and players snore with Z particles, slimes trail slime, allays and vexes emit magic, and a sheared sheep drops fluff.

  3. Movement dust

Players and a few mobs raise running dust clouds, and mobs puff dust when they hit the ground.

  4. Health and hunger cues

A heartbeat plays at three hearts or less, and a stomach growl plays at three hunger or less.

  5. Mob head shader

Wearing a mob head applies the spectator shader for that mob, with support limited to a couple of head types so far.

  6. Smoke and burning

Burning entities show sparks, smoke and flames, and vanilla smoke uses updated textures similar to campfire smoke.

Use cases

Atmospheric survival

Players who want more visual feedback around fire, torches and light sources can enable the fire, glowstone and dust effects.

Tuning performance

Particle culling and the render distance setting let a player limit how many particles are drawn at once.

Who it’s for: Players who want more ambient detail in vanilla play, and server owners who want to decide whether to add a client-side visual layer.
