Smarter Creepers

by okdashi

Smarter Creepers changes how Creeper explosions treat the terrain around them, so blocks a player has built are spared while the blast looks and behaves like the vanilla one.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalCustom license1.21.9 – 26.1

What it does

A custom explosion handler replaces the damage step of Creeper blasts. Terrain the player has placed is protected, while the blast keeps its usual sound, shape and visual effects. Because the custom explosion handler runs regardless of the mobGriefing game rule, the protection still applies on worlds where that rule is enabled, which covers most survival worlds.

Entities still take the same damage as in vanilla Minecraft, and charged Creepers still cause mobs to drop heads. Only the destruction of blocks is changed. The mod needs to run on the server, because the explosion logic lives there, while players may join without installing anything. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, for the 1.21.9 – 26.1 builds listed on its page, with 1.3 for 26.1 as the latest file.

The license is custom and the code is not open source. The author asks server owners who plan to use the mod in a modpack to read the usage guidelines first. Snapshot builds are not published.

Key features

  1. Block protection

Blocks placed by players are kept intact when a Creeper explodes, so builds survive nearby blasts.

  2. Vanilla damage kept

Entities take the same damage as they do in vanilla Minecraft, so combat and mob threat are not rebalanced.

  3. Charged Creepers unchanged

Charged Creepers still drop mob heads, as they do without the mod.

  4. Identical explosion look

The blast appears the same as a normal Creeper explosion, with no extra effects added.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack builders who want Creeper explosions to leave player-built terrain alone. Players only need the server to run the mod.

How it compares

Full comparison

Anti-Creeper is server-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.19 – 1.21.11. No Creeper Griefing is server required with client optional, open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.21 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Smarter Creepers requires the server and is not open source, so it differs from both in license and in its custom explosion handling.
