Smarter Nether Portals

by Glsl2

Smarter Nether Portals changes how Minecraft pairs Nether portals, so that a portal built in the Nether links to the correct overworld portal on worlds with small borders.

What it does

The mod modifies how Minecraft creates Nether portals. The Nether scales eightfold against the overworld, so a small overworld border corresponds to a much wider Nether, and the vanilla portal search radius can fail to link portals in a world with a small border. The mod adjusts that search radius and the placement of created portals so that they connect reliably in such a world.

The change affects portal linking only. The radius is raised, which can mean a portal snaps to another portal nearby that the player did not intend to connect to. Smarter Nether Portals requires Fabric API. It is server-side only, so players join without installing it, and it is published for Fabric alone, with a single file for 1.21.11.

Key features

  1. Portal search radius

The vanilla portal search radius is raised, so portals link across the Nether scale even in small worlds.

  2. Nether scale handling

Portal placement is adjusted to account for the eightfold scale difference between the overworld and the Nether.

  3. Small world border support

Survival games and servers with small world borders are the setting where players have the most trouble linking portals, and the mod targets that case.

  4. Closer portal snapping

Because the radius is larger, a portal may connect to another portal nearby that was not the intended target.

Questions

Does Smarter Nether Portals need Fabric API?

Do players need to install Smarter Nether Portals?

No. The mod is server-side only, so players join a server that runs it without installing anything.

Which Minecraft version does the mod support?

The only published file is version 1.0.1 for 1.21.11, released on 2026-03-20 on the alpha channel.

What the author says

Modifies how Minecraft creates Nether Portals. The scale of the overworld and nether is now dependent on the difference in center positions and size of the world borders. This is useful for small world border survival games on servers where the players have trouble linking portals in the nether (maybe leaking their…
