Simple Buffers

by lukebemish

Simple Buffers lets a player place storage blocks that hold items and move them to and from neighboring inventories, with first-in-first-out ordering and redstone control.

FabricForgeClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.18.1

What it does

Buffers are configurable storage blocks meant to ease automation. Items enter a buffer and leave in first-in-first-out order, so the earliest items added are the first to leave. A buffer can be filled and emptied passively by hoppers, pipes and other mods, or it can actively push items into and pull items from nearby inventories. Each side of a buffer can carry its own filter, and buffers can be sped up with upgrades and controlled with redstone.

Installation requires Architectury API on both Fabric and Forge, and Fabric API is also needed on Fabric. Players on a server that runs the mod need it installed as well. The mod targets 1.18.1 only, with the latest file for either loader dated 2022-01-23 on the beta channel. Simple Buffers is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Configurable buffers

Buffers can be tuned for how they hold and release items, which helps ease automation chains.

  2. Push and pull transfer

A buffer can actively push items to and pull items from inventories beside it, not only wait for other blocks.

  3. Independent side filters

Each side of a buffer has its own filter, so items can enter from one face and leave from another.

  4. Round-robin and limits

Round-robin mode cycles through filtered items, and transfer can be limited based on the number of matching items in an inventory.

  5. Redstone and speed upgrades

Redstone signals control buffer behavior, and speed upgrades increase how quickly items move.

Use cases

Sorting lines

Buffers placed between machines can hold a steady flow of items while filters route each type to the right side.

Pipe-free transfer

Passive filling by hoppers and pipes lets items reach a buffer without a separate transport system.

Who it’s for: Players building automated factories in 1.18.1 who want buffers that hold items in order and move them through filtered sides. Server owners running the mod also need it installed on every client.

Simple Buffers covers only 1.18.1, so these mods suit later versions.
