Tempest

by lukebemish

Tempest, a world generation mod by lukebemish, replaces clear skies in 1.20.1 with regional winter storms that bring snow, sleet, ice and hail.

What it does

Storms are placed by noise across the world, so winter weather appears in some regions and not others. Rain turns to snow or sleet depending on conditions, and a storm can clear after a while, letting the weather warm up again. Datapacks can control where and how the storms appear.

Snow builds up in banks that can form powder snow underneath, and sleet coats the ground with ice and freezes machines that are not working on it. Hail damages glass, crops and flowers. Blocks can be set to freeze up or break under these effects through the tempest:freezes_up and tempest:breaks_with_hail block tags.

Tempest runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt, all at version 0.1.13 for 1.20.1, released 2024-05-13. The project is released under the BSD 3-Clause License and is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Regional winter storms

Storms are placed by noise, so cold weather covers some regions while others stay clear.

  2. Snow, sleet and hail

Precipitation changes with conditions, from snowfall to icy sleet and damaging hail.

  3. Snow banks and powder snow

Snow accumulates over time and can leave powder snow hazards underneath.

  4. Datapack-controlled blocks

Block tags decide which blocks freeze up under sleet or break under hail, and datapacks can adjust the storms.

What the author says

Dynamical, regional winter weather, meant to make your in-game skies as miserable as those outside! Tempest adds noise-based, datapack-controllable regional winter storms, which bring snow, sleet, and ice that melts when the storm is gone. The weather is quite pleasant, but don't be fooled - storms will surely roll…
