Simple Sugarcane Farming

Sugarcane in this datapack can be planted on blocks adjacent to a water source, and it keeps growing without needing water nearby. The datapack changes the block tag that controls which blocks support sugarcane, so farms can be built in layouts that the vanilla rules would not allow. Sugarcane is set to grow exactly as expected next to water, which keeps timing predictable for farm builders.

The datapack adds a custom tag for these blocks under a dedicated namespace, and a single block gets a tag of its own. Frosted ice is the usual block in the frost-related tag, so the tag is set up to keep frost walker boots from breaking sugarcane. The datapack also sets a scoreholder on first load, which confirms that the installation ran. It is installed as a datapack rather than a loader mod, so it runs on the server side and needs the server to be configured for it.

The mod is a server requirement, and the client may run it optionally. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, plus a data pack form, covering 26.1 – 26.3. The MIT License covers the code, and the project is not open source under a separate arrangement.
