Self-Sustainable

by ivangeevo

Self-Sustainable reshapes Minecraft survival by making fire, food and movement cost more, so players must plan ahead for hunger and resources.

What it does

Fire-starting tools now have to be held down to light a fire rather than working instantly. The fire plough, bow drill and flint steel all follow this rule, and the firestarter that lights fires fastest among them works under the same condition. Bricks must be sun-dried or cooked in an oven after they are acquired, which adds another step before they can be used.

Food changes make eating a more deliberate choice. Food items provide less hunger saturation, and eating raw food or eating in unintended amounts gives the player a hunger effect that the mod calls food poisoning. Hunger also drains gradually while a player stands still, which stops endless AFK play, and jumping and sprinting consume more stamina than before.

Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. It requires BTWR: Shared Library and Fabric API, and is published for Fabric 1.21.1 only. Its latest file is version 0.7, an alpha build from 2026-09-11, and the code is available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, which means it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Held firestarting

Fire plough, bow drill and flint steel require the player to keep holding the action to light a fire.

  2. Lower saturation

Food items restore less hunger saturation than in vanilla, so meals need to be eaten more often.

  3. Raw food penalties

Eating raw food, or eating too much of it, applies a hunger effect that the mod calls food poisoning.

  4. Periodic exhaustion

Players lose some hunger over time while idle, which limits how long a player can stay AFK.

Use cases

Harder survival runs

Players who want a tougher survival experience can plan movement and food to manage scarce resources.

Long-term world play

Because hunger drains over time and exhaustion builds with movement, survival worlds stay demanding across the whole game.

Who it’s for: Players who want tougher survival rules, and server owners who want to limit idle play and reward planning.
