Respawn Recap
Respawn Recap plays a short memory animation after the player dies, inspired by the Nomai memory sequence in Outer Wilds.
What it does
After a death, the mod plays a respawn animation modeled on the Nomai memory sequence from Outer Wilds. Screenshots are saved at intervals while the game is running, and when the player dies the saved frames are shown as the replay. The recordings are kept in the .minecraft/respawnrecap/replay/ folder, where the newest recording is also kept as a backup to watch again after it has played.
The mod runs only on the client, so a single-player world or a joined multiplayer server needs nothing extra on the server side. Its dependency is Kotlin for Forge, which is required on the Forge build. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, covering game versions 1.20 – 26.3 with 24 release versions, and the latest file for each loader targets 26.3 or 1.20.1. The code is open source under the MIT License. Because it is unofficial fan content made under permission from Mobius Digital, the creative elements are not approved or endorsed by that company.
Key features
Outer Wilds-style respawn replay
On death the client shows a memory-style animation drawn from recorded screenshots.
Periodic screenshot capture
Screenshots are saved on a schedule during play to build the frames used for the replay.
Automatic thinning of recordings
When the stored count passes 300, older captures are thinned out so the set does not grow without limit.
Local recording folder
Recordings are stored under .minecraft/respawnrecap/replay/ and can be deleted by hand to free disk space.

Use cases
Single-player survival
A player who dies often can watch the memory animation after each respawn during a long solo run.
Fan projects inspired by Outer Wilds
Creators who want a respawn sequence with a similar feel can see how the mod handles the effect on the client.
Who it’s for: Players who want a respawn animation in the style of Outer Wilds, and players on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge who run the game on their own client.
How it compares
Cinematic Respawn is the only alternative with a client-side only environment and loaders matching Respawn Recap across Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.7.10 – 26.2, under All rights reserved. Outer Wilds Discs is a Forge and NeoForge mod for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 that runs as client and server, and it adds disc items rather than a respawn effect.
