Realistic Nametag
by hikoma0000
Realistic Nametag changes how player name tags are drawn, so they stop showing through solid blocks and objects when something stands between the viewer and the player.
What it does
A name tag that is hidden behind a block is no longer drawn over it. Tags behind opaque blocks stay hidden, while blocks such as glass let the tag remain visible. When a tag is only partly covered, only the uncovered portion is drawn, so the visible part of the text reflects what the viewer can actually see.
The mod is a Forge and NeoForge build for 1.16.5 – 1.21.1, with files for 1.16.5, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. Client and server both need it, so servers and players must run it together. A server-side config option can turn the mod's features off completely, or leave its effects active in spectator mode. Simple Voice Chat and Essential Mod are named as companion mods in the author notes, and the code is not open source; it is released under All rights reserved.
Key features
Occlusion-based name tags
Name tags are hidden when a block or object stands between the viewer and the player, instead of showing through walls.
Transparent blocks stay see-through
Name tags remain visible through transparent blocks such as glass, while opaque blocks still obscure them.
Partial obstruction
A tag that is partly blocked is drawn only where it is unobstructed, keeping the visible text accurate.
Configurable disable and spectator option
A setting can fully disable the mod's features, or keep its effects active in spectator mode.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Survival and hide-and-seek servers
Players on multiplayer servers cannot spot others through terrain, so the fairness of hidden play is kept.
Spectator play
The option to keep effects active in spectator mode lets server owners choose how tags behave for observers.
Who it’s for: Server owners who want name tags to respect line of sight, and players who join those servers. Because the mod runs on both sides, a server that adopts it needs every joining client to have it installed.
Questions
Does Realistic Nametag need to be installed on both sides?
Which loaders and versions does Realistic Nametag support?
Can the server turn the mod's effects off?
