Questlog

by InfernalStudios

Questlog is a quest mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge in which the quests are defined entirely by JSON files and shown in a little book-style checklist.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverApache License 2.0Open source1.19 – 1.21.1

What it does

Quests are written as JSON, and creators can set each one to trigger when it is completed, showing either a toast panel or a notification badge on the inventory screen. Notifications use the badge rather than a pop-up that covers the screen, so a player does not miss an important piece of information. Writing the files means learning the JSON format and placing them in the questlog folder of the config directory, and the mod ships reference quests as examples. An in-game editor in edit mode is also available for building quests.

The quest presentation follows the format of Oblivion's quest system from The Elder Scrolls, and the artwork can be altered through resource packs. Questlog is meant to fill gaps left by other quest systems for information conveyance in modpacks, and it suits more complex goals than small fetch-style tasks. Questlog also includes default mod content. The mod requires Cloth Config API, and Questlog Quest Book is one of the mods that depend on it.

Questlog runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 12 release versions, 1.19 – 1.21.1, with 3.4.1 as the latest build for 1.21.1. The code is open source under the Apache License 2.0, and public links exist for the source code, issue tracker and wiki.

Key features

  1. JSON-defined quests

Every quest is described in a JSON file, so modpack makers can add their own without editing any Java code.

  2. Book-style quest list

Quests appear as a little book or checklist rather than spreadsheet-like tables.

  3. Completion notifications

A completed quest can show a toast panel or a badge on the inventory screen.

  4. Resource-pack artwork

Quest art and assets can be replaced through resource packs, so the look can match a modpack's style.

  5. In-game editor

An edit mode lets creators build quests inside the game instead of only writing files.

What the author says

Questlog is a mod designed to add… Well, quests to your game! This mod is entirely JSON-driven. You will need to learn how to write JSON files and put them in the questlog folder in the config to make use of it.
