Progress Peek

by decce6

With Progress Peek installed, the game's loading progress shows as a bar on the taskbar while the window is minimized or in the background.

What it does

The mod reports progress for several stages of startup: the game loading, resource loading and world creation. Each stage is passed to the operating system so the taskbar entry fills as work completes, which lets a player follow a long load without switching back to the game window.

Updates to the taskbar are cached, so the mod only calls into the operating system when the state or the progress value actually changes. The native calls go through LWJGL, which uses JNI or the Foreign Function and Memory API where the runtime supports it. Progress Peek runs only on the client, so a server does not need it and players do not need it on a server they join.

Builds are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 1.21.8, 1.21.9, 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2 and 26.2. The latest file for each loader targets 26.2, except Forge, which targets 1.20.1. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and source code and an issue tracker are linked from its public pages.

Key features

  1. Startup progress on the taskbar

The taskbar entry shows how far the game has come through loading, resource loading and world creation.

  2. Covers world creation too

Progress is also reported while a new world is generated, not only during the first start of the game.

  3. Cached native updates

The current taskbar state and progress are stored, so repeated identical updates skip the native call.

  4. Native taskbar drawing

The bar is drawn through the operating system's own taskbar interface, with no separate window added.

  5. Desktop launcher hook

The progress value is sent to the desktop launcher through the Unity LauncherAPI over libdbus.

Use cases

Watching a long modpack start

A player with many mods can keep working in another window and check the taskbar for the loading stage.

Creating large worlds

The bar also tracks world generation, so a player can see how much of a new world is left.

Who it’s for: Players who run the game on a desktop and want to see loading progress without bringing the game window forward.

How it compares

Full comparison

TaskbarIconChanger is a Fabric client mod for 1.21 – 1.21.11 under the MIT License. It changes the taskbar icon rather than showing progress. Startup Time is open source under the MIT License and runs on the client alone, with files for 1.19 – 26.2 on Fabric and NeoForge, and it reports startup timing instead of taskbar progress.

Questions

Does Progress Peek need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which loaders does Progress Peek support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt each have a file. The latest build for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt targets 26.2, and the latest Forge build targets 1.20.1.

Can the progress bar be used on macOS?

The author text does not list macOS support, so the mod is documented only for the desktop systems its features describe.

In the catalog

Progress Peek is one of 36,990 Utility mods on ModsFinder, and one of 25,772 Utility mods for Fabric. 13,894 mods support Minecraft 26.2.
