Powered Flashlight

by hd42

Powered Flashlight adds a handheld flashlight item for Forge that draws its power from Forge Energy, so players in dark areas can carry light without torches.

ForgeClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.19.2 – 1.20.4

What it does

The flashlight is a handheld item that lights the area around the player, which helps in caves and nighttime exploration. It uses Forge Energy and can be charged by chargers from other mods that offer Forge Energy support. Setting energyDrainPerTick to 0 removes the energy requirement entirely, and the configuration file adjusts the flashlight's properties and behaviour.

The light can be drawn through three dynamic lighting systems: Embeddium or Rubidium Dynamic Lights, Lucent, or the vanilla lighting system that uses light blocks. Each player sees their own lighting, and players on the same server can use different lighting mods without conflict. Entity lighting has to be enabled in the dynamic lighting mod for the effect to appear on mobs. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, and the source code is public.

Files cover 1.19.2 – 1.20.4 on Forge, with 1.0.0 for 1.20.4 as the latest build, published 2024-08-09. The mod runs on client and server. Light distribution is handled on the client, because spawning light entities on a server instance is described by the author as a poor choice.

Questions

Does Powered Flashlight need an energy source?

The flashlight uses Forge Energy. Setting energyDrainPerTick to 0 in the configuration disables the energy requirement completely.

Does the server need Powered Flashlight installed?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which dynamic lighting mod should be used with Powered Flashlight?

The mod supports Embeddium or Rubidium Dynamic Lights, Lucent, and the vanilla light-block system. If artifacts appear with one version of Embeddium or Rubidium Dynamic Lights, the author suggests trying a different version.
