Parrot Fish

by luxamy

Parrot Fish gives the coral reefs a new role: a fish that eats dead coral and turns it into sand that players can collect.

FabricClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.20.4

What it does

Parrot Fish spawns only in warm oceans. A player can pick one up with a bucket, let it eat, or cook it, and each type of coral it eats determines the kind of sand it leaves behind. The mod presents this as a renewable sand source, an alternative to farming sand from husks as many players suggest.

Dead coral fans and dead coral blocks are the food the fish looks for. The mod works on both client and server, so server owners and every player need it installed. Files are published for Fabric only, for game versions 1.20.1 – 1.20.4, and the code is not open source, with All rights reserved as its license.

The mod does not depend on any other library, so Fabric is the only loader needed. It is the author's first mod and the textures were made by a non-artist, as the author notes.

Key features

  1. Renewable sand

Parrot Fish produce sand over time from the dead coral they consume, so sand does not run out.

  2. Coral-dependent output

The type of sand produced depends on the type of coral the fish ate, adding a small detail to the sand supply.

  3. Warm ocean spawns

Parrot Fish appear only in warm ocean biomes, keeping them tied to the reef environment.

  4. Bucket and cooking

A fish can be picked up with a bucket or cooked and eaten, so the player can use it directly.

Use cases

Automated sand supply

Players who want sand without farming can keep a fish fed with dead coral and collect the output.

Who it’s for: Players who want a renewable sand source tied to ocean life, and server owners who want an automated sand option without husk farms.

How it compares

Full comparison

Save the parrots and Heal the parrots are both Fabric mods for 1.21.11 that are server required and client optional, under All rights reserved, so they target a newer version range than Parrot Fish. Eat Sand works with both client and server for 1.20.2 – 1.20.6, a range that partly overlaps Parrot Fish, and is under the MIT License.

What the author says

They only spawn in Warm Oceans, can be picked up with a bucket and also cooked and eaten. Parrot Fish are animals that exist in the Real World and eat Coral to make Sand, so I thought this would be a better alternative to make Sand renewable instead of making it drop by Husks like most people suggest.
