Overhauled Damage

by TheRedBrain

Overhauled Damage changes how combat damage works, adding elemental shields, parrying, status effects and effect build-ups that players can see on the HUD.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

The mod overhauls several mechanics built around damage. Damage dealt to an entity is recorded as a Minecraft damage type, and the mod defines its own death messages and resistance behaviour. Elemental damage can be blocked by a shield, and parrying is included as part of the same system.

Build-up is a resource that replaces health at zero by default. Events such as taking damage raise the build-up, which drains gradually with time; when it hits a set threshold, the corresponding status effect takes hold and the build-up returns to zero. Build-ups are displayed on the HUD. Several status effects are added for these build-ups: bleeding, burning, chilled, frozen, poison, shocked, staggered and a hit stun. Some of them are still waiting on third-party APIs to be updated, so not every effect applies gameplay changes yet. The mod is open source under the MIT License and runs on client and server, so both the server and every player need it.

Key features

  1. Elemental damage shielding

Elemental damage can be blocked by shields, and parrying is part of the same damage system.

  2. Effect build-ups

A build-up resource fills from damage and events, drains over time, and applies a status effect when it reaches a threshold.

  3. Bleeding and burning

Bleeding deals damage as a percentage of an entity's maximum health, and burning deals damage over time.

  4. Chilled and frozen

Chilled reduces attack and movement speed, while frozen is a gameplay effect that limits an entity's actions.

  5. Configurable poison

The poison effect can be tuned to a version that differs from the vanilla one, and it never kills a target outright the way the vanilla effect can.
