Opticores
by Potatochip
Opticores is a client-side rendering optimization mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge that adds asynchronous culling to Embeddium and Sodium, aimed at low-end graphics hardware.
What it does
Opticores moves distance and frustum intersection math off the main rendering thread and onto a background worker, so the render thread stops waiting on culling work. The results are kept in a map built for concurrent access, and the render thread reads the finished result instead of recalculating it. The author states that the aim is to remove the bottleneck on integrated graphics such as Intel UHD and Iris Xe, and on other low-end devices.
The mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it and players join without installing it. It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 22 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3, and its Fabric build requires Fabric API, Sodium, Embeddium and Cloth Config API. Opticores is open source under the MIT License, and its source code, issue tracker and wiki are public.
Key features
Asynchronous culling pipeline
Culling runs on a background worker, and the results are handed to the render thread once they are ready.
Concurrent data management
Culling output is kept in a thread-safe map, so reads on the render thread do not require locking the work of the worker.
Dynamic load throttling
While chunks load in a demanding area, entity rendering is temporarily reduced, and terrain generation near a new location is given priority.
Custom block entity bypass
Custom block entities, such as those used by Create, are skipped by culling to avoid conflicts with Distant Horizons and Voxy level-of-detail generation.

How it compares
Afterburner: Optimized is open source under the MIT License, works on Fabric and Forge for 1.21.1 – 26.3, and runs on either side, and neither needs it. Cullify is client-side only and open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, with files for 1.20.1 – 26.1.2 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Opticores is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.20.1 – 26.3 on three loaders.
