Open In Inventory

by ZZZank

Open In Inventory lets a player open a guidebook, backpack or handheld item with one click from the inventory, without the item having to be in the hotbar.

What it does

Open In Inventory targets containers and item-based screens that players normally reach by holding them and pressing a key. A single click on an item in the inventory opens its screen, and the mod can locate an item, transfer it to the hotbar or close the GUI without extra steps. Right-clicking an item also opens it, and a configurable option can require the main hand to be empty first.

Once the player leaves the GUI, the mod can swap the stack back to its original slot, which keeps the inventory layout unchanged after the item is used. Scrolling the mouse wheel selects items from the hotbar. The mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it, and the license is the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the code is open source. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with builds covering 1.19 – 1.21.1.

Key features

  1. Single-click opening

A single click opens guidebooks, backpacks and handheld items directly from the inventory screen.

  2. Locate and transfer

Items can be located in the inventory or moved into the hotbar, saving repeated searching.

  3. Auto swap back

After the GUI is closed, the item returns to its original slot so the inventory keeps its layout.

  4. Configurable main hand check

An option can require the main hand to be empty before an item opens, which the player can change.

Use cases

Quick access to a backpack

A player can open a backpack mid-session without moving it to the hotbar first.

Reading a guidebook

Guidebooks open with a click, so a player can check notes while keeping the inventory in view.

Who it’s for: Players who use backpacks, guidebooks or handheld items often and want fewer clicks to open them. Since only the client runs the mod, it needs no setup on a server.
