Older Animations

by vc

Older Animations brings back the older item, combat and enchantment animations on the 1.8.9 Forge client, with no other dependencies needed.

ForgeClient-side onlyMIT License1.8.9

What it does

The mod swaps several visual effects for older versions of the same animations. Eating animations, the enchantment glint on items and the red damage tint on hurt entities are all replaced with their earlier forms, which many players find simpler. Its visual changes are kept small so that the game keeps running smoothly on modest hardware.

Older Animations is built for 1.8.9 and has no dependency on any mod other than Forge itself, so it can be added to a plain Forge installation. Settings are handled through an in-game screen opened from the mod's options. The mod is licensed under the MIT License and is not open source.

Files are published for Forge only, for 1.8.9 with 1.3.1-tweaks as the latest file. Because the work happens on the client, a server does not need the mod, and players who join without it see the normal animations.

Key features

  1. Older eating animation

Food and drink use an earlier eating animation in place of the default one.

  2. Older enchantment glint

Enchanted items show a glint effect in an earlier style, giving them a different sheen.

  3. Older damage tint

Entities that take damage flash red using the earlier tint effect.

  4. In-game settings screen

A GUI opened from the options menu lets players change which animations are active without editing files.

Use cases

Keeping earlier animations

Players who prefer the earlier animations can keep them while staying on 1.8.9.

Casual play

Players who prefer a calmer visual style can keep the animations they are used to while playing single-player or on a server.

Who it’s for: Players on Forge 1.8.9 who want earlier animations, and anyone who prefers a simpler, older visual style over the defaults.

How it compares

Full comparison

Blockhithelper is a Forge mod for 1.8.9 that is also client-side only, but it is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. De-Glint My Items! covers a different range, 1.21 – 1.21.1 on Forge, with a client and server environment and the Apache License 2.0, so it targets a newer game version and needs installing on both sides.
