Nuclear Radiation

by igentuman

Nuclear Radiation simulates radioactive hazards in Minecraft using real isotopes, decay rates and dose units, so exposure depends on physics rather than a single abstract rad number.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Placed radioactive blocks emit radiation into the world, and the simulation tracks activity in becquerels, absorbed dose in grays and biological dose in sieverts. Each radiation type carries its own quality factor, so gamma and X-ray exposure is handled differently from alpha or beta. Shielding is calculated from material density, which makes lead and concrete meaningful barriers.

Background processing keeps the cost tied to nearby sources through a spatial radiation-field cache, and sources have a hard radius cutoff. Iodine pills matter after exposure. The server and every player need the mod installed. Files are published for NeoForge only, for 26.1.2 and 1.21.1, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Isotope decay

Active sources decay per second according to their real half-lives, so a placed sample weakens over time.

  2. Dose accumulation

Biological dose builds up live while a player stands in a field and is also tracked as a lifetime total.

  3. Radiation types

Alpha, beta, gamma and X-ray radiation use proper quality factors, so penetrating rays and close-range particles hit differently.

  4. Shielding by density

Dense materials such as lead and concrete stop penetrating radiation, while thin materials pass most of it through.

  5. Medical countermeasures

Iodine pills reduce the effect of exposure after a player has been irradiated.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want nuclear material handled with real units, and server owners who want radiation hazards that stay fast on busy servers.

Questions

Does Nuclear Radiation need to be installed on the server?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Which game versions does Nuclear Radiation support?

Files exist for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2. The latest NeoForge file is 26.1-1.0.0-beta1 for 26.1.2, published on the beta channel.

Does NuclearCraft Neoteric require this mod?

Yes. NuclearCraft Neoteric lists Nuclear Radiation as a required dependency, so it must be installed alongside it.

What the author says

Physics-driven radiation simulation for Minecraft. Real isotopes, real decay, real units. Radioactivity that behaves the way it does in the actual world - not a hand-wavy "rads" bar. If you've ever wanted Minecraft to take nuclear material seriously - where a dropped chunk of spent fuel is genuinely dangerous, where…
