NoiseThreader

by fonnymunkey

With NoiseThreader installed on a Forge 1.12.2 server, world generation spreads its noise calculations across several processor threads instead of running them on the main server thread alone.

What it does

Standard noise generators perform their costly height-map and terrain calculations only on the main server thread while chunks are generated. NoiseThreader splits those calculations and distributes the load across multiple threads, which can reduce the time each new chunk takes. The gain depends on the hardware, so results differ between systems.

The mod adds multi-threading to the noise generators of the vanilla Overworld, End and Nether, as well as the Overworld generator of OpenTerrainGenerator and the cave carver of YUNG's BetterCaves. Profiling reported about a 50% improvement for the vanilla Overworld and near 60% for OpenTerrainGenerator, whose heavier generation benefits more. The Nether and End gain less, roughly 10%, because they use smaller noise generations. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it, and it is published for Forge 1.12.2 only. Multi-threading starts only when a machine has at least a minimum core count, which defaults to 4 as a safety margin.

Key features

  1. Multi-threaded noise generation

Noise generators for the vanilla Overworld, End and Nether split their calculations across several threads.

  2. Cave carver acceleration

The cave carver of YUNG's BetterCaves runs multi-threaded, and its profiled gain was about 60%.

  3. Terrain generator support

The Overworld generator of OpenTerrainGenerator is covered, where the largest share of the speedup is reported.

  4. Configurable core threshold

A minimum core count, defaulting to 4, decides when multi-threading is attempted, and it can be lowered in the config.

Questions

Does NoiseThreader need to be installed on the client?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

Which dimensions does NoiseThreader speed up?

The vanilla Overworld, End and Nether, plus the Overworld generator of OpenTerrainGenerator and the cave carver of YUNG's BetterCaves.

Why might a machine see little improvement?

Gains vary across systems. The mod only multi-threads when the core count meets the minimum, which defaults to 4, so lower-core machines may see little change unless the number is lowered in the config.

What the author says

NoiseThreader improves world generation performance by selectively multi-threading world generators such as the noise generators. Currently adds multi-threading to noise generators for Vanilla dimensions (Overworld/End/Nether) as well as OpenTerrainGenerator's Overworld generator. Additionally adds multi-threading to…
