Netherite Buckets

by TheRedBrain

Netherite Buckets lets players carry lava in a netherite bucket, which normal buckets cannot hold, and use it to fill cauldrons.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Netherite Buckets adds a netherite bucket that can pick up and hold lava, along with netherite cauldrons that accept it. Normal lava buckets and lava cauldrons still exist, but a normal bucket can no longer pick up lava in a fresh world, so the netherite version becomes the route to lava. Players who already have normal lava buckets or cauldrons in an existing world keep them, and the mod notes this when the world loads.

The mod combines two ideas: the netherite bucket is an alternative to the usual lava source, and it introduces a lava mechanic that destroys every item except netherite. Lava can be used to set up an automatic lava farm from drip stone cauldrons, which gives a source of limitless fuel for furnaces. The advancement tree is adjusted, so obsidian follows smelting iron and the lava bucket requires obtaining ancient debris while holding the netherite bucket.

The mod requires Fabric API and runs on Fabric for game versions 1.21.1 – 26.1.2, with files published across six release versions. It is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Netherite lava bucket

A netherite bucket holds lava and displays as a Netherite Lava Bucket in the hand.

  2. Netherite cauldrons

Netherite cauldrons accept lava from the netherite bucket, so lava can be stored and used without normal buckets.

  3. Lava farm

Drip stone cauldrons can be set up as an automatic lava farm, giving a steady supply of lava.

  4. Limitless furnace fuel

Lava from the farm gives furnaces an unlimited fuel source once the setup is in place.

  5. Item-destroying lava

Lava destroys any item dropped into it except netherite, which adds a risk to handling lava.

How it compares

Full comparison

Bedrock Cauldrons is server-side only, open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and runs on Fabric for 1.21.6 – 26.3, so players join without installing it. Lava Clear View is client-side only, not open source, under All rights reserved, and covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.20 – 26.1.2, so it changes what the client shows rather than how lava is carried.

What the author says

Adds netherite buckets and netherite cauldrons. They can be used to hold/pick up lava, while normal buckets and cauldrons no longer can. Ever felt like lava is way too powerful when used as a fuel source?
