Music Disk DJ

by Plugway

Music Disk DJ lets players search YouTube and SoundCloud in game and place the tracks they pick onto music discs, replacing the default ones.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20.1 – 1.20.2

What it does

A search screen opens inside the game, reached by pressing J, where a player looks up songs on YouTube or SoundCloud and assigns a chosen track to a music disc. The result replaces the default disc sound, so a player can build a set of preferred songs for jukeboxes and disc use. The key binding can be changed in the game's control settings.

Playlists can be shared between players by writing them into books, so a list built by one person can be passed to another without repeating the search. The mod runs on the client alone, which means servers do not need to install anything, and it requires Fabric API. It is published for Fabric and Quilt, covering 1.20.1 and 1.20.2, and the code is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so the source is open source.

The first time the mod runs it creates a resource pack, which is not activated automatically. A player has to enable that pack by hand once, and after that the replaced sounds are used. Future work is planned, though the author notes that Quilt support was less tested than Fabric.

Use cases

Personal soundtracks

A player keeps a favorite selection on discs for use in their own base or on a jukebox.

Passing along a list

One player writes a playlist into a book so others can load the same tracks.

Who it’s for: Players on Fabric or Quilt who want their own songs on music discs. Because the mod is client-side, it suits single-player worlds and multiplayer players whose server does not have to change.

How it compares

Full comparison

Music Boxes is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, runs on Fabric for 1.20 – 1.20.4, and needs both client and server. Disx is open source under the Apache License 2.0, supports Fabric, Forge and Quilt for 1.20.1, and also needs both sides. Music Disk DJ is client-side only, so it adds nothing to the server.

Questions

Does Music Disk DJ need Fabric API?

Yes. The mod requires Fabric API, which must be installed alongside it on Fabric or Quilt.

Does the server need the mod?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Why does the resource pack not work right away?

The generated resource pack is not activated automatically, so a player must enable it manually one time.
